4/10 14:09: Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald tweets, “Lowell says retirement after this season not at 100 percent likelihood but pretty high.”

4/10 13:58: According to Amalie Benjamin of the Boston Globe, Mike Lowell said that he will almost certainly be done with baseball at the end of his deal, which would make this his final season.

Lowell has been frustrated over the off-season. He lost his starting job to Adrian Beltre and he’s been the subject of trade rumors that have gone nowhere. Lowell was originally going to be traded to the Texas Rangers this winter, but it was called off after doctors discovered the ligament tear in his thumb.   Part of the deal with the Rangers was that the Red Sox were going to pick up $9 million of the $12 million salary.
