The Arizona Diamondbacks got an early start to their offseason as they announced that they have acquired Marlins relief pitcher Heath Bell and Cliff Pennington of the Oakland Athletics. The Athletics will receive outfielder Chris Young from the D’backs while the Marlins will receive prospect Yordy Cabrera. The D’backs will also receive about $8mm in cash.

Bell, who signed a three-year $27mm deal last offseason with Miami, struggled mightily posting a 4-5 record with a 5.09 ERA with 19 saves and 8 blown saves, the highest total of his career. Many expected Bell to be traded as he under performed in his first season in Miami and was constantly clashing with manager Ozzie Guillen.

Pennington logged time at second and shortstop this season for the A’s, making only 11 errors (9 at short, 2 at second). At the plate he posted a .215/.278/.311 with 90 hits and 15 stolen bases.

Young who appeared in only 101 games because of injuries, hit .231/.311/.434 with 14 home runs, the lowest total of his career. The trade also allows the D’backs to start promising outfielder Adam Eaton in center. In 103 plate appearances, Eaton hit .259/.382/.412 with 22 hits.
